Reid Spencer Consulting

Experience

Independent Consultant, 02/2006 to Present

I am currently providing consulting services to business and technical customers. Here are some of the projects I'm working:

Mercury Interactive 05/2003 to 12/2005

When Mercury acquired Performant, Inc. I was asked to join Mercury to help jumpstart the market for Performant's OptiBench product. As the Chief Performance Consultant, I was responsible for:

  • Demo App
  • Field Engagements
  • Engagement Methodology
  • J2EE Diagnostics Certification
  • Teaching and Sponsoring J2EE Diagnostics
  • SAP Partnership

eXtensible Systems, Inc. 10/2002 to 05/2003 (ongoing)

I founded XSI to promote extensible programming and built the initial versions of the eXtensible Programming System (XPS). However, due to the lack of venture capital available at the time, this venture never got off the ground. The software is available as open source from http://x-p-s.org/.

Performant, Inc., 7/2000 to 10/2002

I was the Chief Product Strategist at Performant, Inc. I joined Performant as the fifth employee after assisting the founders for two years with the business plans. In this executive level position, my main responsibilities were the definition, specification and test plans for Performant's first product, OptiBench. However, being a startup, I was also responsible for or helped with:

  • Completing a detailed competitive analysis of the Application Performance Management market segment.
  • Performing market research including surveying potential customers and conducting a focus group.
  • Producing Performant's logo, web site, and initial marketing collateral (http://www.performant.com)
  • Hiring the Director of Product Development, VP of Professional Services, office manager, two software engineers, and a product manager.
  • Initially managing and executing customer engagements, as needed.
  • Conducting the product beta program, product installations, and gathering feedback from customers.
  • Writing user and technical documentation for OptiBench.
  • Constructing the demonstration applications for OptiBench, eBank, and PetStore

Concero, Inc. (formerly PSW Technologies), 8/97 to 6/00

I was employed at Concero, Inc. as a Chief Technologist. This is the highest technical position Concero offers but also involves significant business and management skill. At Concero, I have worked on the following projects:

Technical Resource Connection, 7/96 to 7/97

I was employed at TRC as a senior infrastructure architect and project manager. I helped TRC define its infrastructure architecture and managed the Swiss Bank IEMS project.

Independent Consultant, 1/1992 to 7/1996

I provided my professional services as an independent consultant during this period. The various contracts and positions overlapped chronologically but are listed below in reverse order of start date.

Teknekron Communication Systems, 6/1990 to 1/1992

My position with TCSI involved the specification, design, development and testing of OSI NM/Forum compliant network management systems. The work required close involvement with TCSI clients to produce state-of-the-art object-oriented systems that control large networks of telephone and digital switching equipment. At TCSI, I worked on the following projects:

MPR TelTech, Inc., 7/1989 to 6/1990

At MPR, I was initiated into the world of telecommunications. After some initial training, I assisted and led various projects for the Digital Support System (DSS). My specific projects involved the following:

SoftQuad, Inc., 10/1986 to 6/1989

At SoftQuad, I worked with a small team to develop the core components of the Author/Editor product. This was one of the highlights of my career and the software I wrote for Author/Editor lives on today in Corel's XMetaL products.

Versatron Technology, Inc., 1/1986 to 8/1986

This small embedded systems consulting company hired me to take responsibility for all their software development. I worked on the following projects:

Unitek Technologies Corp., 2/1985 to 12/1985

While at Unitek, I worked as a software engineer with responsibility for development of a portable Application Development System for the UNIX (BSD 4.2) and PC/DOS platforms. I also worked on an expert system for financial analysis. I was released from UTC when project funding was terminated due to a change in the Canadian SRTC tax code forced UTC to close its doors (seriously!)

Independent Contracting, 5/1981 to 12/1984

During this period, I worked as a contract programmer and statistician for the University of British Columbia, Environment Canada and various private individuals and companies. Some of the projects I worked on are listed below:
